ELTON — STURTZ – Barbara Jane, 75, Elton, passed away Aug. 28, 2013, in Johnstown. Born Dec. 26, 1937, in Tire Hill, daughter of David John and Stella (Nestor) Clement. Preceded in death by parents; husband, John Sturtz; and brothers, David and Daniel Clement. Survived by son, John Sturtz, married to Sue (Fuhrmeister), Marlboro, N.Y.; sister, Sandra Clement, married to David L. Golden, Elton; and grandson, Ryan Sturtz, New York City. Member of Westmont Presbyterian Church. A 1955 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School, as a member of the National Honor Society, and a 1958 graduate of Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Washington, D.C., Memorial Hospital in Johnstown and Windber Community Hospital, where she retired as a critical care nurse. Barbara was a caring and compassionate person who loved to travel and was a voracious reader. Devouring several books a week in her golden years, she was a constant presence at Highland Community Library. As a nurse, she was known for her skill, caring for some of the most severely ill members of the community. A former member of Westmont Presbyterian Church Choir, she was a high alto whose favorite songs were Handel’s “Halleluiah Chorus” and Cohen’s “Halleluiah.” A dear friend to her Class of ’58 nursing school classmates, enjoying a monthly luncheon and fellowship after 50 years. A loving mother and devoted sister, and those who knew her will miss her, but we rejoice that she has entered the kingdom of heaven. Friends received from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills, 2503 Bedford St. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Highland Community Library, 330 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown, Pa. 15904.
