Martha Elaine Mowery

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS — MOWERY – Martha Elaine, 66, Cedar Park, Texas, passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012. Born July 13, 1946, in Johnstown, to Harry and Elizabeth Weigel. Preceded in death by parents and brother, Ronny. Martha grew up in Robindale and graduated from United High School in 1965. After graduation, she worked at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in the radiology department as a medical clerk. Martha had plans to attend nursing school; but life, marriage to her high school sweetheart John, and raising four boys turned out to be her calling. Martha managed to make it look easy raising four boys while picking up and moving every two to three years due to John’s military assignments. Of the 13 assignments, the ones she cherished most were the two that took them across the Atlantic to Germany, and the time spent in Panama City, Fla. Those who met Martha were always impressed by her kindness, hospitality and thoughtfulness. She turned each house she occupied into a home that was well decorated and always festive during the holidays. Martha, John and the boys eventually settled in Texas and continued raising their family after retirement from the military. As her sons grew older, she pursued her other interests, which included learning to play piano, knitting, cross stitching and volunteering at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. Martha also took the time to earn an associate degree from Del Mar College in real estate. Martha loved to travel and one of her favorite places was Wildwood, N.J. Going there was an annual event with time spent on the beach, eating ice cream at Duffers and catching up with her sisters, brothers and extended family. Most of the catching up was done enjoying the evening at the mall in Cape May. When her sons began to have families of their own, she embraced her new role as Mimi. It was with her grandchildren that her generosity of spirit, devotion and love were always felt. Martha’s strengths became more apparent with her diagnosis of breast cancer. The best of her was on display as she fought with grace, strength, confidence and the will to never let her illness define her. Survived by loving husband of 45 years; and her sons and their families, Jim and Kim, and their children, Claire, Gavin, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Ryan; John and Kellie, and their sons, John and Dylan; Jason and Maggie, and their sons, Henry and Isaac; and Jeff and Ingrid, and Jeff’s children, Emma and Scott. Also survived by sisters and brothers, Suzy, Harry, Vivian, Barbara and Dave; as well as multiple nieces and nephews. She will be missed. An open visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 8, at Wrench Funeral Home, 1200 S. Bagdad Road, Leander, Texas, where funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to The Settlement Home for Children, 1600 Payton Gin Road, Austin, Texas, 78758. Arrangements are under the direction of Wrench Funeral Home, Leander/Cedar Park, Texas.
