Alice Gardner

TYRONE — GARDNER – Alice, 91, Tyrone, formerly of Johnstown, passed away May 31, 2012, at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. Born Dec. 2, 1920, in Johnstown, daughter of the late William Frank and Irene (Garlathy) Plachy. She married Maynard C. (Hank) Gardner, who died on Nov. 20, 1966. She had resided in Johnstown most of her life. Preceded in death by sister, Irene, Johnstown; and brother, David, Houston, Texas. Surviving are her daughter, Karen Kohan, and husband, Jim, Tyrone; grandchildren, James Maynard, Harrisburg; and John William, Tyrone; brother, William, and wife, Carolyn (Reich), Harvard, Ill.; brother, Richard, and wife, Phyllis (Popolo), Johnstown; and sister, Mary Jane Stevens (widow of Howard), Livonia, Mich.; also numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was a 16-year-old graduate of Ferndale Area High School (1936) and a member of Ferndale United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed by Pickett, Hyde & Langins. She was past president of Ferndale ladies auxiliary and vice president of the Republican Club. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and various board games. A private graveside service was held Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. John Henderson Co. is in charge of arrangements.
