TEXAS — EVON – Dorothy L. (Carruthers), passed away peacefully Dec. 31, 2012, in Porter, Texas. Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Lilly, to the late William and Alice Carruthers. Preceded in death by husband, Joseph E.; son, Joseph M. “Mick”; daughter-in-law, Karen; grandson, Patrick Casey; brothers, William and Kenneth Carruthers; and sisters, Esther Claar, Ethel Campagna and Margaret Bart. Survived by daughters, Linda Rose and Kathryn “Kitty” Kavanshansky; and son-in-law, Roger Kavanshansky, Huffman, Texas; granddaughters, Stacey (Brett) Briskin, LaCrescenta, Calif.; Michelle Casey, Spring, Texas; and Kathy (Chris) Rejeck, Atascosita, Texas; great-grandsons, Connor and Garrett Briskin; great-granddaughters, Cambria Briskin and Raelyn Rejeck; and sister, Lois Brann, Van Wert, Ohio. Mrs. Evon graduated from Lilly-Washington High School in 1938. She was one of two remaining from this class. She was employed by the United Workers of America, Ebensburg office, for 25 years, where she aided many coal miners in receiving compensation benefits. She served on the board of education at Penn Cambria School District from 1968 to 1980. She was the first woman elected president of the board. She dedicated her life to her family, helping out wherever needed. She welcomed all with a smile and open arms. She enjoyed bowling, traveling, reading and cooking. She always would prepare huge Sunday dinners just in case anyone would drop by. She spent most of her life in Pennsylvania, having moved to Texas to be with family. A special thanks to all the caregivers at Plantation Assisted Living in Porter, Texas. Their care and dedication will always be remembered.
