CRESSON — VERMEULEN – George A. Sr., 80, Cresson, died Feb. 6, 2013, at home. Born June 21, 1932, in Lilly, son of the late George J. and Sophia (Zentack) Vermeulen. Preceded in death by brother, Chester; and great-grandsons, Nathan and Liam Wagner. Survived by wife, Roberta (Boland), whom he married March 3, 1956, in Cresson; children, George Jr. (Donna Skiles), Lancaster; Valerie (Kevin Smith), Lilly; Gary (Debbie Lowmaster), Cresson; Tina (Edward Fuller), Cresson; Susan (Donald Yogus), Gallitzin; and Lisa (Charles Mack), Ebensburg; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Gloria (Charles Stanko), Phoenixville. Also survived by beloved pet, Ginger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He served as a technical sergeant with the Air Force, retiring after 20 years of service. He retired in 1985 from Ebensburg Center as a pipe and steam fitter. His entire life was dedicated to baseball, including managing, coaching and directing leagues for players of all ages. Member of American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, Cresson American Legion Post 238, Sankertown VFW Post 7377 and St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson. George was an avid Steelers and Notre Name football fan. Friends received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Church, the Very Rev. Father John D. Byrnes. Committal, church cemetery. Military graveside rites by Cresson American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local veteran organizations.
