Commission allows an extra wood duck

The news is generally good for area waterfowl hunters, whose bill of fare is mostly puddle ducks. But, all is not rosy where diving ducks predominate because of declines in canvasbacks and scaup.
“This year, we’re able to offer an extra wood duck in the bag because populations of wood ducks have been stable to slightly increasing, particularly in northeastern states,” said Pennsylvania Game Commission game bird section supervisor John Dunn. “That’s good news.”

  • Juniors get their shot at pheasant
The Pennsylvania Game Commission will begin stocking 15,090 pheasants this week to support the special youth season for junior license holders, which runs from Saturday through Oct. 18.
The allotment is part of the 100,170 pheasants that are to be released this fall across the state for small-game season. The 10-county Southwest Region, which includes Cambria and Somerset counties, is to receive 19,260 roosters and 5,440 hens.
The regular season on pheasants runs from Oct. 25 through Nov. 29.

  • Joe Gorden | Eastern locales test system
Hunters who haven’t yet purchased a license this year can finally do so through the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s computerized licensing system, but they may have to travel to do it.
The necessary equipment has been installed at seven places, including fish and game commission headquarters in Harrisburg; all six game commission regional offices, including the one in Bolivar; Wal-Mart in Mechanicsburg; the Cumberland, Schuylkill and York county treasurers’ offices; the Bass Pro Shops and Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in Harrisburg; and Artistic Edges in York.

Archery deer season doesn’t begin until Saturday, but most of those who will participate have already taken steps that will assure their success or failure.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Game Commission encourages hunters to devote as much time as possible to preseason scouting.

  • JOE GORDEN | Motorists should be wary of deer
Hunters like to complain that Pennsylvania’s deer herd has been reduced to a virtual remnant, but insurance company statistics indicate that there are still enough out there to present a serious hazard to motorists.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently issued a warning for drivers to watch for deer, and Erie Insurance did the same during the past week.
