Orioles pin loss on Pirates

BRADENTON, Fla. — Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Kyle McPherson gave up three runs in the third inning, and the Baltimore Orioles held on for a 6-3 victory Friday night at McKechnie Field.

Wei-Yin Chen allowed two runs, one earned, over 21⁄3 innings in his second start for Baltimore.

With the score tied at 1, McPherson hit leadoff batter Alexi Casilla in the third and walked Ryan Flaherty. Jason Pridie hit a one-out RBI single, Travis Ishikawa doubled in a run and Trayvon Robinson drove in another with a single.

It was McPherson’s third start of the spring.

Pittsburgh’s 2011 minor league pitcher of the year is fighting for a spot in the rotation.

Starling Marte was 2 for 2 with a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored for the Pirates.

Baltimore scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

McPherson allowed four runs on six hits over three innings, taking the loss.

Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez each had an RBI for the Pirates.

    Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury stuffed the initial shot by Cam Atkinson but Calvert stood all alone at the left post and wristed a shot into the open net to even the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at one game each.

    Kyle Lohse pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Carlos Gomez homered and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Friday night.
    Lohse (3-1) improved to 11-2 in his career against the Pirates, allowing one earned run in a win against them for the second time in six days.
