Central Cambria’s Murin earns championship at 106 pounds
Central Cambria freshman Max Murin was the only area wrestler to capture gold Saturday during the PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional tournament at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The 106-pounder edged out Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link 2-0 in the bracket’s championship bout.
Rams hope to end long drought
Tonight’s District 6 Class AA boys’ basketball championship game at St. Francis University offers a few history lessons – both recent and not-so-recent.
Top-seeded Richland High will attempt to win the school’s first district title in boys’ basketball since 1975 when the Rams meet Central High School at 8:30 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
Richland boys easily outdistance Penns Valley
Penns Valley faced an uphill battle heading into halftime.
Penns Valley settled for jumper after jumper as it struggled to establish an inside game against the taller Richland team. And Richland point guard Kyle Flick constantly pushed the tempo, finding open teammates and finishing on his own in a transition game Penns Valley couldn’t keep up with.
Richland players share workload in 6-AA victory
Top-seeded Richland brought plenty of playmakers into the District 6 Class AA boys basketball postseason.
As coach Greg Burke sees it, the key is how effectively the Rams utilize all of those tools.
Richland’s 73-59 victory over No. 9 West Branch at Central Cambria High School on Friday night backed his assessment.
District 6 lists Class A, AA seedings
On Tuesday, District 6 basketball chairman T.J. Kakabar released the seedings for Class A and AA for the upcoming basketball tournament.
The Portage girls and the boys from Bishop Carroll and Richland all earned top seeds in their respective classes.

LHAC, WestPAC titles up for grabs
The winter weather has played havoc on the area athletic schedules and athletic directors have been challenged to reschedule events in a smaller and ever-narrowing time frame.
With that in mind, several teams still have to nail down their berths in Saturday’s WestPAC and Laurel Highlands Conference basketball championship games.

Berlin puts five in final round to win Thomas tournament
Berlin Brothersvalley sent five wrestlers to championship matches Saturday at the Thomas Subaru Tournament at Bedford Area High School.
Even though the Mountaineers only had one champion – Joe Swank at 120 pounds – the round served as a victory lap of sorts with Berlin Brothersvalley easily outdistancing the field to take the team title with 205 points. Chestnut Ridge followed with 156 points.
