    But, literally, a last-second goal by Richland forced the first of two overtime periods in the Laurel Mountain Hockey League semifinal.

    Both spots in the Laurel Mountain Hockey League championship will be decided at Planet Ice in Richland Township tonight.
    Top-seeded Greater Johnstown takes on Hollidaysburg at 6:30 p.m. with Somerset and Richland taking the ice at approximately 8:10 p.m.

    There were just two shots taken in the overtime on Saturday in the first-round PIAA Class AA boys’ basketball game between Quaker Valley and Richland.
    The Quakers had both shots including the game-winner by Winter Fondi with time winding down in a 42-40 victory over the Rams in a nailbiter.

    Coach Greg Burke’s team won the program’s first District 6 boys’ basketball title since 1975 in convincing fashion over Central on March 1.

    Conner Buttry and Aaron Burkett will make their debuts in the PIAA Wrestling Championships this morning, but they are quite familiar with a state tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey.
    Each has been a fixture on the Chestnut Ridge squad that has made back-to-back appearances in the state dual-meet tournament. That familiarity could help them, along with returning state medalist Austin Buttry, when the three Lions hit the mats in Hershey this morning.

  • Richland pride produces victory over Johnstown

    Apparently, no one informed Richland and Greater Johnstown that Wednesday night’s Laurel Mountain Hockey League game technically had no bearing on the upcoming playoff seeds.
    The Rams and Trojans skated with postseason intensity at Planet Ice. Richland used a pair of late third-period goals to upset the top-seeded Trojans 3-1.
