High school seniors can earn cosmetology license

BY BRITTANY NAUGLE

GJCTC SENIOR

The cosmetology program at Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center is an opportunity for interested students to earn 1,250 hours needed to take the board that grants them a cosmetologist license in the state.

By attending and participating in the program, students can finish the needed hours before graduating from high school, which means they can enter the work force.

I have completed 1,250 hours, and have applied to take the state board.

I have passed the practical part of the board.

The next step is the written exam, which includes theory questions and cosmetology laws.

I am scheduled to take the exam on May 12.

Students are required to pass another test at GJCTC called the NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) test.

This test takes place at school and local professionals judge, similar to the state board.

This exam helps prepare students for boards and is required by the Department of Education’s Bureau of Career and Technical Education.

Students in the cosmetology program attended Career and Technical Education Week at the state capital.

GJCTC joined other schools to demonstrate different skills, including nail-art stamping and highlights in a hurry.

This experience has prepared me to face the beauty industry head on.

I plan to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania and study pre-veterinary medicine.

While in college, I plan to support myself by working in a salon.
