District's PSSA scores improving

Every year in mid-spring, schools administer the PSSA, or Pennsylvania State System of Assessments. These tests measure a student’s ability in the areas of mathematics and English. There also are tests available in writing (typically administered in February) and general science education. Every public school district must give this test.

The only fire that fans will find on the ice rink at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena this year will be in the hearts of the Greater Johnstown High School Trojan Hockey Team. Coming off a disappointing 6-9-4 2007 season, the icemen have their sights set on the Open Division Championship. They are piloted by a very determined and talented senior class.

Quiz teams answers rivals

Amongst coughs and stuffy noses, the 2007 Scholastic Quiz season came to an abrupt end. After beating the fourth-seeded Richland Rams, our third-seeded Trojans had to face off against Penn Cambria, the regular season champions. It was a tough match where the team was one question away from pulling ahead half way through the second half. Less than a week later, team advisers, Brian Allison and Wanda Keller, were listing names for the 2008 team.

Principal takes leap of faith

Imagine for a moment settling into a minimum-wage, 40-hour-a-week job just one year after high school – while the memories and dreams still thrive inside you. Whether it’s regretting lost chances or questioning fading ambitions, a sense of restlessness sets in. However, as disappointment and guilt linger, contentment takes over and says maybe it just wasn’t meant to be, maybe I wasn’t cut out for that job.

After 36 years, Cindy Eisler, a 1972 graduate of Shade High School, thought she would never see her class ring again. But that’s not where the story begins. Eisler received her class ring to celebrate her senior year of high school at Shade. But sometime later, she lost her cherished ring.

Video games not evil

It has been my experience that many parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and generally any authority figure one could imagine frown deeply when it comes to the subject of video games. Though these games have been around for decades, many view them as pathways to laziness, antisocialism and a myriad of other unacceptable behavior.

Promising hoops season

There is a certain time during the school year when the atmosphere at Shade changes. It goes from grim and mildly depressing to hopeful and exciting. As the snow begins to fall and the cheering starts to permeate through the hallways of Shade High School, one thing is certain: Basketball season is here.

Knuckle cracking common among younger generation

A huge pre-calculus test is scheduled for the next period, and the entire class starts to show its nerves. Students may bite their nails, some may drum their fingers on the desk and others may crack their knuckles. Knuckle cracking, the irritating noise that drives older generations crazy, proves common among the younger generation.
