Central Cambria girls win 3rd straight PIAA cross country title

Cross country is often thought of as an individual sport, but for the Central Cambria girls, it’s all about the team.

    Blacklick Valley’s first home playoff win in school history had Vikings coach Bill Zamboni reminiscing.
    “The last time I was ever in a situation like this was when my son played in 1986 and they beat Laurel Valley down in Indiana for our only playoff win,” Zamboni said after this year’s Vikings beat visiting Glendale 33-6 in the District 6 Class A playoffs on Saturday afternoon.

  • Pryor leads Buckeyes past Nittany Lions
    The Ohio State Buckeyes are back in control of the Big Ten title race.
    Terrelle Pryor threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in his return to his home state, Ray Small burned No. 11 Penn State with two long punt returns and No. 15 Ohio State won a duel of the league’s top two defenses in a 24-7 victory Saturday.

  • Panthers roll past Orange
    It took Pitt a while to shake off the rust after a bye week, but the Panthers eventually got their act together and rolled to a 37-10 win against Syracuse in a Big East matchup Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field.
    No. 14 Pittsburgh improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

  • Chiefs fall to Nailers in OT
    The Johnstown Chiefs suffered a 4-3 overtime setback at the hands of the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena on Saturday night.

  • Meyersdale topples Tussey Mt.
    Meyersdale rolled into the quarterfinal round of the District 5, Class A playoffs on Saturday with a
    63-29 win over Tussey Mountain.

  • Visiting Monmouth runs past St. Francis
    The Monmouth Hawks controlled the line of scrimmage Saturday in a Northeast Conference game against St. Francis, amassing 229 yards of rushing against the Red Flash.
    On the other side of the ball,
    St. Francis ran into problems when it received opportunities to put points on the board, resulting in a 24-10 Monmouth win at DeGol Field.

  • United earns playoff victory over Bishop Guilfoyle
    United built a first-half lead on a foundation of turnovers, then held off a frantic Bishop Guilfoyle finish for a 22-12 victory in a District 6 Class A first-round playoff game on Friday night.

  • Forest Hills coach notches 300th victory
    At first glance, Forest Hills’ 43-6 victory at Somerset on Friday appeared to be like so many other Rangers’ wins.
    Forest Hills broke off long runs for touchdowns. The Rangers hit a few big passes for more points. The defense nearly had a shutout.
    The formula might have been familiar, but the result was a milestone, as Don Bailey earned his 300th win in his 36th season as head coach of the Rangers.

  • Berlin edges Everett in playoff game
    They call football a game of inches and that’s how close Berlin Brothersvalley came to losing to Everett on Friday night.
    The Mountaineers (5-5) made a defensive stand at the 12 with time winding down to defeat the Warriors 21-20 in the opening round of the District 5 Class A playoffs. Berlin plays next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Windber.

  • Johnstown clobbers host Central Cambria
    The Johnstown Trojans are rolling into the District 6 playoffs.
    Playing with a sophomore quarterback in the first half of a game with Central Cambria, the Trojans (7-3) charged out to a 28-3 lead on their way to a 41-3 victory.

  • Ramires tosses four touchdown passes as Richland ensures right to host in postseason
    Friday was a night of milestones for Richland, as the Rams closed out one of the best regular seasons in school history with a 44-22 win over visiting Penn Cambria.
    The Rams (8-2) established an all-time single-season scoring record, won eight games for the first time since 1971, and, most importantly, earned the right to host a District 6-AA playoff game for the first time next week against Huntingdon.

  • Ligonier Valley, Corcoran trounce North Star
    Ligonier Valley completed the regular season Friday night with a dominating 54-21 win over North Star.
    With the win, Ligonier (7-3) awaits its first-round opponent next Friday in the District 6 class AA state football playoffs.

  • Westmont closes season on high note
    Ryan Burnheimer ran for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass, and senior quarterback Casey Eckenrod threw for two scores and set up a third TD with a long pass as Westmont Hilltop closed out its season with a 46-6 win at Cambria Heights Friday night.

  • Bedford too much for rival Chestnut Ridge
    Marcus Shippey carried 17 times for a season-high 177 yards and three touchdowns as Bedford outlasted county rival Chestnut Ridge 31-20 Friday night.
    The Bisons’ defense forced four turnovers, including a fumble returned for a touchdown, and yielded just one play longer than 40 yards.
