Inside the Keystone clash

A look at how the Pittsburgh Penguins match up with the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference finals, which begin tonight in Pittsburgh:....more>>

  • Three area schools atop District 6 playoff seedings
After 30 years, Portage coach Larry McCabe has the top seeded team in the District 6 baseball playoffs.
The Mustangs, who earned the top spot in Class AA, are the only local school to do so in baseball. Two local softball teams – Greater Johnstown in Class AAA and Blacklick Valley in Class AA – head into the playoffs atop their respective classes.

  • McCort grad recognized by D-II
Pitt-Johnstown senior infielder Dan DelSignore was named to the second team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District II team on Thursday.
DelSignore, a graduate of Bishop McCort High School, has posted a 3.46 G.P.A. in secondary mathematics education.

  • St. Francis taking a swing at NEC
St. Francis enters its first Northeast Conference softball championship tournament since 2002 in style.
The Red Flash have won 10 of their past 11 conference games and 13 of 19 overall.

  • Central Cambria captures conference championship
The Central Cambria boys track and field team capped a perfect dual-meet season with its first victory in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championship Meet in nearly a decade Wednesday afternoon at Johnstown High School.

  • Grays seek new prescription for success
One of the most recognizable franchises in recent Johnstown AAABA League history will be under new sponsorship when the regular season opens on May 27.
Martella’s Pharmacy will take over the team formerly known as the Johnstown Grays. The Grays went 231-140 in nine seasons including three league titles and ensuing appearances in the national AAABA Tournament.

  • Area native shrugs off chemo to win 5K race
The fact that Dave Rovansek finished 24th in Sunday’s Race for Hope is an impressive accomplishment on its own merit.
The 34-year-old Westmont Hilltop graduate was among a field of 7,000 runners in a 5K race in Washington D.C. To place 24th in a time of 19:50 is quite a feat.
But perhaps of greater significance was that Rovansek was the top finisher among brain-cancer survivors. The Race for Hope raises funds for brain-tumor research.

  • Three former AAABA stars pitching in the big leagues
Tuesday was a big night for AAABA Tournament graduates in the major leagues.
The most high-profile event involved Chicago White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd, whose near-miss, no-hit bid was well-documented in print, on the Internet and cable television highlight shows most of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The 6-foot-5, right-handed Floyd pitched for runner-up Baltimore in the 2000 AAABA Tournament in Johnstown.
“Gavin has gotten so much bigger and stronger,” said Dean Albany, manager of the five-time defending champion You

  • Rams run off with another conference crown
The Richland girls track and field team is used to winning the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference title, claiming five regular-season championships prior to this year.
The Rams lost to Central Cambria by four points in this season’s dual meet, but bounced back to claim the crown at the conference championships Tuesday at Johnstown High School.
“The girls just amaze me,” Richland coach Mike Sabol said.

  • Jim Wexell | Mendenhall off to a strong start
Scenes in the mind of a sportswriter who just covered the Steelers’ spring minicamp:

  • Cory Isenberg | Haus right at home in Bedford
Super late model driver Scott Haus kept his streak alive at Bedford Speedway on Friday night.
The Hamburg driver, the all-time wins leader in the division at Bedford, took the checkered flag for his 35th career win. It maintained his string of at least one victory each year at Bedford since 1995.
Jason Covert finished second with defending track champion Jack Pencil third, and Week 1 winner Nick Dickson, fourth. Steve Everhart, who started the evening in the 19th-starting position, was fifth.

  • Windber girls work past Mountaineers, take WestPAC
It came down to the final few events before a girls team winner was crowned Monday at Meyersdale Area High School in the WestPAC Track and Field Championship.
In the end, Windber claimed the team title with 131 points, just nine points ahead of second-place Berlin Brothersvalley.
“I was real happy with the girls,” Windber coach Tim Saylor said.

  • Webb, Windber boys fend off field
When the boys team scores were tallied at the end of the WestPAC Track and Field Championships Monday at Meyersdale Area High School, it was a pleasant surprise for Windber coach Tim Saylor to find out that his Ramblers had won.
“It’s really nice to get this meet back,” Saylor said. “I think it says a lot about our boys.”
