Principle Development 10 Roxberry Creamery 1

Gregg Bandzuh threw a five-hit complete game in Principle Development’s victory in the early game at Point Stadium on Thursday.

He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Matt Donaldson, who went 4-for-4, broke the game open with a bases-loaded triple in the fourth and Matt Snyder added a three-run double in the seventh.

Dino Tessari had two hits for Principle while Wayne Deneen and Joel Ackerman each went 2-for-3 for Roxberry Creamery.



Running

Richland graduate honored

Richland graduate Marie George has been named to the Northeast Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.

George, a freshman who competes for the Robert Morris cross country, indoor track and track and field teams, was also named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll for the fall term. She is a nursing and health sciences major.



Basketball

Big East schedule released

PROVIDENCE, R.I.–The Pitt men might get a bit of a break in the 2009-10 season.

The Panthers, who lost four starters from last year’s squad that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, will face two of the Big East’s worst teams – St. John’s and Seton Hall – twice during the upcoming season. They also get rival West Virginia at home and on the road in the pairings released Thursday by the league.

Pitt’s home conference games are against Georgetown, Louisville, Providence, Rutgers, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Villanova and West Virginia.

The Panthers’ conference road opponents include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John’s, Seton Hall, South Florida, Syracuse and West Virginia.

The full schedule has not yet been released.



Dixon’s U.S. team beats Iran

NORTH SHORE, New Zealand – The United States used a balanced effort to beat Iran 106-55 in the opening game of the U19 World Championship.

The U.S. team, which is coached by Pitt’s Jamie Dixon, had seven players score in double figures. Kansas’ Tyshawn Taylor led the way with 13 points and Duke’s Seth Curry added 12.

Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs played 20 minutes off the bench, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and hitting both of his

3-point attempts. He also dished out four assists, finished with two steals and grabbed two rebounds.

“One thing we did pretty well was shoot the ball, and we made some extra passes, made good decisions. We need to cut down on some turnovers, but I think it was a good start,” Dixon said. “We know we’ve got to get better as this tournament continues so this is the first one and hopefully we’ve got something to build on.”
