BASEBALL

10 from area chosen for traveling Jay Sox

Ten area players are among those who have made the roster of the Johnstown Jay Sox traveling baseball team, which will begin its seven-week tournament tour in August.

They are Bobby Carbaugh, Richland; Bronson Bowser, Northern Bedford; Danny Gray, Richland; Zack Vignero, Bishop McCort; Luke Trotz and Aaron Dreikorn, both Central Cambria; Adam Lechak and Ben Pearce, both Johnstown; George Roberts, Forest Hills; John Fees, Cambria Heights.

“This gives kids an opportunity to be showcased by many colleges and pro scouts, and to further their education and their baseball,” said Jay Sox General Manager Dee Dee Osborne.

The Jay Sox open their fifth season in Shippensburg Aug. 9-10. Then, they will travel to tournaments at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., on Aug. 16-17 and Mount St. Mary’s in Frederick, Md., on Aug. 23-24 before returning to Johnstown on Aug. 30-31.

The Jay Sox will go to Kent State, Ohio, Sept. 6-7; Reading Sept. 13-14 and Harrisburg Sept. 20-21.

Coach Gary Dudukovich is assisted by Chance Osborne.

AAABA League

GMI Renegades 11, Delweld 4

Cory Manarelli had three hits, including a double, Tom Burkett, Kyle Bowser and Brad Dale each had two hits and Greg Stewart homered for GMI Renegades in a win over Delweld at Roxbury Park.

Principle Development 2, NORAC Lab 1

Andy Rubal went 2-for-3, including a game-winning RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, for Principle Development in a win over NORAC Lab in the late game at Point Stadium on Friday.

Dino Tessari went 3-for-3 with an RBI for NORAC Lab.

Late Thursday

Martella’s Pharmacy 4, Principle Development 2

Martella’s Chris Sobota struck out 13 batters in a two-hitter in a win over Principle Development in the late game at Thursday’s Point.

Sobota took a no-hitter into the sixth inning after pitching a no-hitter in his previous start. Casey Teagarden was 2-for-4 with a run and a run batted in. Steve Bills went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Evan Gazza drove in two.

GOLF

Greater Johnstown Junior Tournament

Wolfe holds on for 10-shot win

Sunnehanna’s Mac Wolfe led after each day of the Greater Johnstown Junior Tournament and he put it away with a 71 at Sunnehanna on Friday to win the event by 10 strokes.

Wolfe led by a single shot after three rounds before his final round 1-over par at his home course.

Luke Purazo finished second with a four-day total of 309, 10 shots behind Wolfe’s 299. Phil Keilman came in third with 312.

Wolfe’s performance helped Sunnehanna take the team title with a four-day, four golfer total of 1,341. Berkley Hills finished second with 1,352, followed by Windber’s 1,381 and North Fork’s 1,468.

BASKETBALL

College Women

ROBINSON FRUCHTL ANNOUNCES BASKETBALL ROSTER CHANGES

LORETTO – St. Francis University head women’s basketball coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl announced on Friday that three players will not return for the 2008-09 season.

Chelsea Barsky (Pittstown, N.J. / Voorhees), Lauren Donahoe (Export, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) and Julianne Smith (Terrace Park, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) have chosen to transfer to Division II institutions.

“Chelsea, Lauren and Julianne have made decisions that they believe are in their best interests,” said Robinson Fruchtl, whose entire 2008-09 team is currently attending classes on campus. “We wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.”

Barsky sat out most of the 2007-08 season with an injury. She played in just one game after seeing action in 26 games as a freshman in 2006-07.

Donahoe played in 52 games during her two seasons in the Red Flash program, averaging 1.9 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Smith played in 20 games as a freshman this season, scoring six points and pulling down 21 rebounds.
