Baseball stars take Point honors

By MIKE MASTOVICH
The Tribune-Democrat

The Point Stadium Award Committee announced four monthly winners and two play-of-the-month nominees after a Tuesday vote.

The monthly winners will be eligible for the annual Point Stadium Award and scholarship presented after the 2008 sports schedule at the facility concludes.

There also will be an annual play of the year.

The monthly Point Stadium Award winners are:

n March: Pitt-Johnstown pitcher Chuck Boring. The right-hander struck out nine batters in five innings during the Mountain Cats’ 3-2 win over Alderson-Broaddus on March 21. He allowed three hits and one run.

n April: Bishop McCort High School’s Colin Harrington. The then-junior pitcher tossed a complete game, striking out 10, in a 6-2 win over Bishop Carroll on April 3. Harrington also had three hits at the plate.

n May: Shippensburg pitcher Tim Freshour. The Richland High graduate and former AAABA standout had a successful homecoming during the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Region Tournament opener on May 15. The left-hander pitched a four-hitter in a 10-2 victory over West Virginia State. Freshour struck out seven and walked two. The Raiders junior retired 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced.

n June: Martella’s Pharmacy pitcher Sam Watkins. The right-hander threw a two-hitter in a 4-0 victory over Principle Development. Watkins had five strikeouts on June 7.

The Point Stadium Play of the Month winners are:

n April: Greater Johnstown High School infielder/pitcher Bobby Helman. The Trojans senior slugged a grand slam to left-center field in the fifth inning as Johnstown defeated rival Bishop McCort 7-1 on April 11. The Crushers led 1-0 prior to the blast.

n June: B. Hale Boilers slugger Justin Gdula. The 14-year-old Johnstown Recreation Pony League player cleared the brick wall in left-center field, near the 336-foot marker on June 1. While unconfirmed, Gdula might be the youngest player to put one over the wall.
