VOLLEYBALL
UPJ falters on road
Pitt-Johnstown’s Taylor Hrescak, a Richland graduate, and Kristin Irwin each had eight kills, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Lady Cats from falling at Alderson-Broaddus.
The defeat ended the Lady Cats’ three-match win streak.
UPJ fell 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14 and dropped to 7-5 overall, 3-3 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Katie Shadron, a Ligonier native, had 11 digs, as did Abby Gearhart (Forest Hills). Chestnut Ridge graduate Kayla Lape had five kills.

FOOTBALL
Trojans to honor 1958 champions
Greater Johnstown High School will honor the 1958 WPIAL Class AA championship football squad during the weekend of Oct. 3-4.
The 1958 team and all athletes who played under former coach Dave Hart are invited to attend a 50th anniversary reunion at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena on Oct. 3.
The next day, Johnstown High will host the 1958 team for a dinner. The WPIAL champs then will attend the current Johnstown team’s LHAC game that night against Bishop Carroll at Trojan Stadium. The 1958 squad will be introduced at halftime.
Pitt to honor Olympians
Pitt will celebrate two Olympic anniversaries this weekend during the Pitt-Iowa football game. Pitt will honor the 20th anniversary of Roger Kingdom’s gold-medal victory in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1988 Seoul Games and the 60th anniversary of Herb Douglas’ bronze-medal performance in the long jump at the 1948 London Games.
Douglas, a Pittsburgh native, enrolled at Pitt in 1945 and along with teammate Jimmy Joe Robinson, integrated the Panthers football team. As a track star, Douglas won a combined eight Amateur Athletic Union and intercollegiate championships.
Kingdom is Pitt’s only two-time Olympic medal winner. He captured gold in the 110 hurdles at both the 1984 Los Angeles games as well as in Seoul. The Monroeville native’s distinguished career highlights include five U.S. championships, two NCAA championships and an induction to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
