SOCCER

Trojan selected for program

Johnstown junior Ed Sheets was selected as one of 10 PIAA athletes to attend a National Student Leadership Conference from July 17-20 in Indianapolis.

The conference provides a forum for student and adult leaders to discuss contemporary issues facing education-based athletics and activities.



RUNNING

Seymour an ACC honoree

Duke freshman Carly Seymour, a Central Cambria graduate, was recently named the ACC’s Performer of the Week, the conference announced.

Seymour was selected along with men’s team member James Osborne.

Seymour opened her freshman season by finishing seventh out of 222 runners at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota with a time of 21:40 over the 6K course. Seymour’s effort helped the Blue Devils to a fourth-place finish. She finished just 11 seconds behind the winner.



GOLF

Straw second in districts

Bishop McCort’s Kurtis Straw held tough with a second-round 77, but couldn’t make up the ground against Tyrone’s Jim Ferguson at the District 6 golf championship Thursday.

Straw followed his opening-round 75 with the 77 for a two-round total of 158, three shots back of Ferguson who fired two straight 74s.

The tournament wrapped up its second day at Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg.

Penn Cambria’s Will McMahon finished fourth after winning a playoff for the spot. McMahon shot a 154 total, one stroke behind third-place Connor Garrity of team champion Hollidaysburg.

Straw’s Bishop McCort teammate Luke Purazo was eighth with a 160 total. The top eight qualify for regionals.

Following Hollidaysburg (645) in the team competition was Central Mountain (654). Somerset (667) and Westmont (679), finished third and fourth, respectively.



VOLLEYBALL

UPJ makes it 8 straight

Kristin Irwin’s 14 kills and eight block assists powered Pitt-Johnstown to a victory over West Liberty State on Wednesday.

UPJ won 25-21, 25-27, 28-26 and 26-24, improving to 15-6 on the season.

Richland graduate Taylor Hrescak had 12 kills and North Star grad Kelly Miller had 10 kills. Sierra Steele (Windber) had five block assists.

Abby Gearhart (Forest Hills) and Katie Shadron (Ligonier Valley) had 26 and 21 digs, respectively.
