COLLEGE SPORTS

Westmont graduate takes third at tourney

Pitt wrestler Kyle Patton, a Westmont Hilltop graduate, earned third place on Sunday at the Washington & Jefferson College Open in Washington, Pa.

Patton, a freshman, stormed through the 149-pound weight class and finished in third place, tallying five wins on the day.

The Panthers travel to Bethlehem, Pa., this Sunday to square off against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at 1 p.m.

Two local women earn AMCC All-Conference honors

Penn State-Altoona athletes Natalie Sheehan (Westmont Hilltop High School) and Sheena Cooper (Windber) have earned Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference all-conference honors in their sports.

Sheehan, who was named honorable mention, was second on the women’s soccer team in scoring with six goals and two assists despite missing six games to injury.

Cooper was also an honorable mention honoree, and is the only player in Penn State-Altoona volleyball history to earn all-conference recognition four consecutive years. She was named to the second team as a freshman and earned honorable mention in 2005 and 2006. She ranks second on the school’s all-time kills list.

Stonecypher earns second-team soccer honors

Bekah Stonecypher, a graduate of Westmont Hilltop High School, has been named to the second team of the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West for soccer.

Stonecypher, a second-team selection last season, was a key contributor in the Lady Eagles’ midfield, starting all 19 games and scoring one goal and two assists.

Volleyball

UPJ defeats Davis & Elkins

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It took five games, but coach Linda Renzi’s Lady Cats volleyball team advanced to the WVIAC quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) College during Thursday’s first round of WVIAC Tournament at the Catholic Sports Complex.

Pitt-Johnstown, the No. 8 seed, will take on top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) University today at 5:00 p.m.

The Lady Cats improved to 15-14 on the season.

FOOTBALL

Area Punt, Pass and Kick winner headed to Heinz Field

Central Cambria Middle School football player Steven Papuga is among the top-ranked competitors in the Age 12-13 Division of the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Team Championship competition.

Papuga, 12, will compete prior to the Steelers game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Heinz Field. The Ebensburg youth advanced based on his first-place finish at a Punt, Pass and Kick Sectional held in Indiana (Pa.). His 301 total feet ranked second among the approximately 10 Western Pennsylvania sectionals held as qualifiers for Sunday’s event. Papuga also won the local Ebensburg competition prior to sectionals.

He plays tailback and linebacker on Central Cambria’s seventh grade squad. Steven is the son of Bill and JoAnne Papuga of Ebensburg.
