More Pirates roster changes are likely in 2nd half

The first half of the Pirates’ season has been more notable for what happened off the field.General Manager Neal Huntington pulled a shocker June 3 when he traded center fielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta for three minor-leaguers that included right-hander Charlie Morton, now in the Pirates’ rotation. McLouth signed a three-year, $15.75-million contract in February after appearing in his first All-Star game and winning his first Gold Glove in 2008.

Pelekanos, Shaulis shine in AAABA League battle

Martella’s Pharmacy right-hander Mike Pelekanos and Berkley Hills Renegades lefty Drew Shaulis each threw well enough to win Thursday night’s AAABA League early game at Point Stadium. How much of a pitchers’ duel was this one?Shaulis took a no-hitter in the seventh inning and his team still trailed by a run.Conversely, Pelekanos scattered eight hits, one in each inning with the exception of two in the bottom of the seventh. The Duquesne University hurler seemed to record the big strikeout when it mattered most in Martella’s 2-0 victory.

Somerset native: From mascot to NHL radio booth

Donning a team’s Iron Dog mascot outfit might not be the most logical launching point to a career in a National Hockey League radio booth. But Somerset’s Bob McElligott was willing to follow an un-orthodox path during a 16-year journey from his days as a costumed canine with the ECHL’s Johnstown Chiefs to his role as a NHL color analyst for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Hanrahan excited about change

John Russell isn’t usually a media critic, but the Pirates manager was somewhat baffled by the coverage of the four-player trade his team made with the Washington Nationals 10 days ago.The Pirates sent left fielder Nyjer Morgan and left-hander reliever Sean Burnett to the Nationals for right-handed reliever Joel Hanrahan and Class AAA outfielder Lastings Milledge.“It seemed like everything I read and heard only focused on Milledge,” Russell said. “It seemed like everyone kind of ignored that we got Joel Hanrahan in the deal. I think people are overlooking the fact that we were able to pick up a young pitcher with a great arm and a lot of ability, someone who could help for a long time.”
