Red Raiders’ pitcher gets best of Mountain Cats

The Pitt-Johnstown baseball team had several opportunities to dent highly touted Shippensburg left-hander Matt Wright on Friday night at Point Stadium. But the Mountain Cats left 12 runners on base, with eight of those in scoring position.Wright, a potential top-five round draft pick who throws in the low 90’s, withstood the multiple threats while throwing 128 pitches in seven innings. The Red Raiders won 11-1 during the second day of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional in Johnstown.

UPJ looks stronger in topping Concord

This Pitt-Johnstown baseball team resembled the one with 30-plus wins and a WVIAC North Division title.UPJ bounced back from a disappointing conference tournament performance by opening the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional with a 6-3 victory over Concord (W.Va.) on Thursday. The Mountain Cats (36-17-1) used a three-run ninth inning to defeat the Mountain Lions (35-14) at Point Stadium.“That was a great feeling winning the first one,” UPJ coach Todd Williams said. “I told these guys the last 11 days, if we win one and get on a roll, who knows what can happen?”

Still in the driver’s seat

As far as the Stanley Cup playoffs go, there are things far worse than becoming known as a team that can’t complete a sweep. The Pittsburgh Penguins risk having that reputation after missing out on a sweep for the second consecutive round, as they lost 4-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at the Wachovia Center.Of course, if they rebound with a Game 5 win, like the did after dropping Game 4 to the New York Rangers in the conference semifinals, coach Michel Therrien will be just fine.

6-AAA meet produces two qualifiers

A pair of area track athletes punched their tickets for the state meet on Thursday afternoon with outstanding performances at the District 6 Class AAA Championships at Mansion Park. Somerset’s Craig Eddy won both the 1,600 and 800 runs, and Johnstown’s Antwuan Reed finished third in the 100 dash with a state qualifying run of 11.0. Eddy ran the 1,600 in 4:29.49 and had a personal-best run of 1:58.87 in the 800.“I won the 1,600 last year and it was even better this year,” said Eddy, who was the top seed in the event. “This is my senior year, so it was awesome. I worked hard this year to get my times down. I depended on my kick at the end.”

Big seventh paces Rams

Ninth-seeded Laurel Valley blew open a tight game with a three-run seventh inning to earn a 7-3 victory over No. 8 Westmont Hilltop on Thursday at Westmont.Holding on to a 4-3 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, Patrick Hall led off with a single. Another single by Myers Miller put two runners on for Tyler Ulery, who smacked an RBI-single up the middle to score Hall. Next, John Jones hit a groundball to shortstop for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but the throw to first sailed high and out of play, allowing Miller and Ulery to score for a 7-3 advantage.

Panthers’ AD headlines club's banquet

Perhaps it was appropriate that Steve Pederson addressed a crowd of more than 200 on Thursday night at Sunnehanna Country Club. The Pitt athletic director has enjoyed quite a comeback with the Panthers program over the past six months. He spoke during an event that marked the return of the Johnstown Chapter of the Panther Club Athletics Banquet.“It’s tremendous to have this event back,” Pederson said. “This area is too important for us for it not to be a big factor in everything we do. We have some of the greatest, most loyal people in the program from Johnstown.”
