Portage earns top seed in 6-A baseball tourney

— Despite less than ideal weather conditions this spring, the District 6 playoffs are set to open on Thursday, right on schedule.

Portage earned the top seed in Class A with a 16-1 record and has a first-round bye. Bishop McCort (13-6) is the second seed while Bishop Carroll (10-6) is third, Juniata Valley (12-6) is fourth, Conemaugh Valley (10-6) is fifth, Homer-Center (11-8) is sixth and Saltsburg (9-7) is seventh. All the seeded teams listed also have first-round byes.

“It’s going to be a challenge, hopefully we can win a few games,” Portage coach Larry McCabe said. “We’ll have to play the Williamsburg-Penns Manor winner. We just have to play good baseball. We’ce been doing that all year but we just have to move forward, but I think the kids are ready for the challenge.”

Play opens on Thursday with ninth-seeded Williamsburg (7-10) traveling to No. 8 Penns Manor (7-9) with the winner to play at Portage on May 19.

The other quarterfinals on May 19 feature the Blue Jays taking on the Green Hornets, the Wildcats against the Huskies and the Trojans facing the defending Class A champion Crimson Crushers.

Semifinals will be May 22 while the Class A title game is 7 p.m. May 28 at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona.

In Class AA, where Central is the top seed, there will be six first-round games on Thursday.

Heritage Conference rivals square off with No. 9 Northern Cambria (12-6) at No. 8 Ligonier Valley (12-7). From the Laurel Highlands Conference, fifth-seeded Forest Hills (12-4) will host No. 12 Penns Valley (7-9) while No. 11 Marion Center (8-6) is at sixth-seeded Richland (14-5). The other matchups have No. 13 Tyrone at fourth-seeded Mount Union while No. 10 Southern Huntingdon is at Blairsville (7).

The Scarlet Dragons, second-seeded Bald Eagle Area and No. 3 Bellwood-Antis all have first-round byes.

The quarterfinals will be on May 19 with the semifinals set for May 22 and the title game at 7 p.m. May 27 in Altoona.

All games are set for 4 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The deadline for Class AAA is on Thursday and will be announced at a later date.
