Breaking news – Richland grad agrees to terms with Cubs

JOHNSTOWN — Austin Urban was looking forward to taking the mound for the Baltimore Youse’s Maryland Orioles on Saturday.

But he has a good reason for not doing so.

The Richland graduate said Friday he has agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs, who drafted him in the 41st round in the first-year player draft in June.

“(It is) pretty exciting,” Urban said in a telephone interview from Point Stadium, where he was watching Livonia take on Johnstown’s Delweld in the AAABA Tournament. Urban would have pitched against the winner on Saturday. “ A little mixed emotions. I was looking forward to pitching tomorrow, but that’s not going to happen now.”

Urban, who pitched for Delweld last year, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round in June 2010 but couldn’t come to terms. He was originally slated to pitch for Penn State last season, but decided instead to transfer to Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa, which would allow him to be drafted again this June.

When he slipped to the 41st round this time, he was a little disappointed, but it all worked out for him in the end.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “Professional baseball has always been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.”
