High School Briefs



North Star 6, Ferndale 1: In Boswell, the Cougars Derek Mullen had three singles with two RBI in a WestPAC victory over the Yellow Jackets. 

North Star’s Zack Muluchnik had three hits and one RBI.  Josh Bloom added two hits in the home win.

Ferndale’s Trey McGough hit two singles in the loss.

Somerset 12, Hollidaysburg 0 (6): In Hollidaysburg, the Golden Eagles Alex Dirienzo piched six innings, giving up only two hits and had six strikeouts in a win against the Golden Tigers.

Somerset’s Tanner Stull had two hits and an RBI.  Ross Dirienzo added three hits with two RBI in the road victory. 

Hollidaysburg’s Bryce Mosteller had two hits in the loss. 

Portage 16, Windber 1 (4): In Windber, Bailey Kerch hit a triple and a home run with five RBI to push  the Mustangs to a mercy-rule win in four innings. 

Portage’s Brandon Madigan hit two doubles and C.W. Miller had a double with one run scored. Luke Dividok was credited the win, giving up only four hits.

Windber’s Bryce Spak hit a double in the home loss. 

Shanksville-Stonycreek 14, Blacklick Valley 5: In Shanksville, an 11-run outburst by Shanksville-Stonycreek in the fifth buoyed the Somerset County Vikings to a win over their Cambria County namesakes.

Levi Brant drove in three runs with a double and Joey Swank had two hits and scored twice for Shanksville-Stonycreek.

Blacklick Valley’s Evan Marsh was 2-for-4.


Conemaugh Valley 10, Conemaugh Township 7: The Blue Jays’ Kaitlyn Stiffler went 2-for-3  with two runs scored and a solo home run in the third inning to defeat the Indians in a WestPAC clash. 

Conemaugh Valley’s Brooke McCleester had two doubles and scored twice. 

Liz Stiffler added three RBI in the win.

Conemaugh Township’s Beth Bronchak went 4-for-4 and Kayla Luprek scored twice in the road loss.

  • aaaba 0721 Martella’s sweeps past Delweld

    A six-run rally in the first helped guide Martella’s Pharmacy to an 8-1 win over Delweld in Game 3 of their best-of-5 AAABA League semifinal series at Point Stadium, sweeping the series in the process.
    That rally also continued season-long trends for the clubs, according to their respective managers.

  • Pirates 0721 Rallying Dodgers snap Pirates’ win streak at 3 games

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.

    Florida State was an obvious choice as a favorite in one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s divisions.
    In the other one, the pecking order was nowhere near that clear.

    Bedford’s Jake Stover had two hits with double and three RBIs in a 9-6 win against host Clearfield in the Pa. American Legion Region 7 Tournament.

    Claysburg’s Mike Mock went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to help his squad get by Beech Creek 7-6 during Sunday’s winners-bracket game in the Pa. American Legion Region 7 Tournament.

  • Pirates 0720 Pirates rally to keep sweep

    Taking the extra base was the key for the Pittsburgh Pirates in completing a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.
