Patton wanted to make sure that it got off to a solid start in the American Legion Cambria League playoffs on Wednesday at home.
The second-seeded Redmen pounded out eight hits and got a pitching gem from Nate Bearer, dispatching No. 7 Richland 12-1 in five innings to move into the second round of the double-elimination tournament.
Bearer struck out eight and walked one, scattering just three hits. He also helped his own cause with a double in the second, the inning which Patton took control of the game with eight runs.
Josh Serafin was 3-for-3 and Evan Waldron 2-for-2 for the Redmen, who also got two RBI apiece from Dom Milanesi and Adam Polites. Tyler Bodenschatz was 2-for-2 for Richland.
In the other game that was played Wednesday, fourth-seeded Bedford edged No. 5 Ebensburg 4-3. No other information was provided.
Two other Wednesday games were postponed due to wet grounds.
Sixth-seeded Portage was set to play at No. 3 St. Michael while top-seeded Claysburg was to face No. 8 Lilly at Revloc.
The postponed Wednesday games will be played today at their respective sites at 5:30 p.m.
The Portage/St. Michael winner plays Patton and the loser faces Richland on Friday. The other Friday game will have the Claysburg/Lilly winner taking on Bedford with the loser squaring off against Ebensburg.
