CORY ISENBERG | Postseason still jumbled in Legion

If it ever stops raining, the Cambria American Legion playoffs are set to begin on Wednesday.

After the Fourth of July holiday, there were still 10 games on the schedule.

“This is driving league president Randy Choby crazy and he’s trying to work through it,” Patton manager Ray Eckenrode said. “It’s frustrating because it always seems to be raining where the games are. This weather system has been sitting over us for the last two weeks and we just have to try to get the games in the best that we can.”

Three games were played on Friday with Ebensburg sweeping Cernic’s in a doubleheader 4-1 and 5-2 and Bedford edging Patton 3-2.

On Saturday, St. Michael shutout Somerset 7-0.

But Sunday there were two doubleheaders and a contest between Richland and Portage on the slate.

Portage downed Richland

4-2 in a rain-shortened 4 1⁄2 inning game But the Lilly/Claysburg doubleheader was rained out until 5:45 p.m. today. The Ebensburg/Cernic’s games were also suspended due to rain and will be completed today starting at 5:30.

The eight playoff teams include Bedford, Claysburg, Patton, Ebensburg, St. Michael, Portage, Lilly and Richland.

Patton is the No. 2 seed and St. Michael is No. 3 while Ebensburg is locked into spot No. 5 and Portage is No. 6.

If Claysburg wins both games today, it will travel to Bedford for a playoff game to determine the South Division champ and overall No. 1 seed at 5:30 Tuesday.

If Lilly wins one game Monday, Bedford is No. 1 and Claysburg is No. 4 with no playoff game needed and Cernic’s will play at Lilly on Tuesday to determine the No. 7 and 8 seeds between Lilly and Richland.

If today’s games are rained out, there will probably be an emergency league meeting to determine a course of action.

Statistically speaking: According to the league website, the number of individuals to hit a home run has jumped to eight, but no one has moved out to the forefront.

Among the active players, Claysburg’s Kasey Hamm has the best batting average with a .519 with Isaac Kline of Bedford second with .514.

Bedford’s Ty Black is the RBI leader with 25. Ivory, Adam Polites and Josh Bonatesta of Patton along with Stern are tied at second with 15.

Among the league’s pitchers, Nathan Bearer has the best ERA with a 0.51 followed by Bedford’s Droz with a 0.88 and Andrew Brawley of Patton at 0.91.

Troy Templeton of Ebensburg has 46 strikeouts to lead that category followed by Fox with 42. Richland’s Ryan Orlovsky has 40, Patton’s Josh Prasko has 33 while Bedford’s Droz has 31 and Portage’s Bailey Kerch, 30.
