McCort pitcher wins May Award

JOHNSTOWN — Bishop McCort High School’s Brad Coleman earned the May Point Stadium Award nomination based on his performance in a District 6 Class A playoff victory on May 22.

Coleman pitched a seven-inning, complete game in a 7-2 win over Homer-Center in the 6-A semifinal round. With the win, McCort clinched its fourth consecutive state tournament playoff berth.

The senior right-handed pitcher struck out 11 and walked one. He scattered seven hits.

At the plate, Coleman went

3-for-3 and scored a run.

“Brad just did a very good job of spotting his breaking pitch and using his fastball to keep those guys off balance,” McCort coach Chris Pfeil said. “That was a huge win for us because it guaranteed us a spot in the state playoffs. It was the beginning of an unbelievable run for him on the mound that got us to the final four.”

Coleman also was the winning pitcher in the 6-A title game and a state quarterfinal victory over Cranberry in McKees Rocks, and he helped McCort reach the state semifinals.

Greater Johnstown second baseman Connor Kobal earned the May Point Stadium Play of the Month honor for his diving stop on a hit into the hole against Bishop McCort on May 7. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kobal lunged toward second base, fielded the hard-hit ball and threw out the runner at first base, preventing the potential tying run in a game the Trojans won 7-6.

Laurel Auto Group’s Mike Nowicki earned the June Play of the Month for his catch of a line drive hit by Delweld’s Ian Helsel on June 5. In the bottom of the first in a scoreless game, Nowicki dove to make a catch of the line drive and hold a runner on second base with two outs.

Coleman joins previous monthly Point nominees Pitt-Johnstown pitcher Derek Younker (March) and UPJ left fielder Nate Negri (April). Bishop McCort baseball players Jeremy Adams (March) and Nathan Neiderhiser (April) were previous Point Stadium Play of the Month nominees.
