Westmont wins swimming title

STATE COLLEGE — Racking up 230 points during the weekend, Westmont Hilltop’s girls swimming team captured the District 6 Class AA team title while claiming four event titles at the district’s swimming and diving championship at Penn State University’s Natatorium.

Somerset was second with 175 points while Richland (163), Bellefonte (126) and Ligonier Valley (124) followed to round out the top five.

The team title allowed Westmont Hilltop to improve on last year’s second-place finish, when it ended the weekend two points behind Bellefonte.

Bellefonte’s 271 points easily outdistanced second-place Richland in the boys meet.

The Rams’ 162 points kept them ahead of Central Cambria (155), Huntingdon (140) and Somerset (134) in the team standings.

The 109-point margin of victory was a litttle more than half of Bellefonte’s 207-point cushion a year ago when it dominated the field.

The Hilltopper girls took first in the 200-yard medley relay using the efforts of Lindsey Aman, Hannah Dorian, Nollaig Noll and Meghan Albertelli to finish at 1 minute, 58.2 seconds, pushing them ahead of Richland (2:00.11) and Bellefonte (2:00.30).

The same quartet, with Noll on the anchor leg, won the 200-yard free relay in 1:43.93.

Noll also claimed titles in the 50-yard freestyle – winning in 24.78 seconds – and the 100-yard freestyle, taking that event in 53.79.

Central Cambria’s Gabby Gironda took the 100-yard butterfly race in 1:01.07. Somerset’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Anna Chan, Elexsis Robison, Mary Mack and Emilt Schleich won in 3:58.07.

Ligonier Valley’s Bethanie Meharey took the 1-meter diving title.

Richland’s boys took home titles in two events, topping the field in the 200 medley relay with Nathan Mihalko, Joshua Nider, Aaron Cooper and Forrest Fordham winning in 1:46.69.

Mihalko also won an individual title in the 100-yard butterfly, edging out a win in 54.44.

Ligonier Valley’s Sam Maust – the region’s other winner in a boys event – took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.58.

The winners of each event automatically qualify for the PIAA championship at Bucknell University from March 14-15.
