Tomahawks get another victory
BLAINE, Minn. – The Johnstown Tomahawks used a 29-save effort from goaltender Colin DeAusgustine along with goals by Joe Drabin, Matt Meier and Shane Cuckovich to top Bismarck 3-1 on Saturday at the NAHL Showcase.
Johnstown finished the four-day event 2-1-1 mark, winning its last two games.
Drabin extended his point streak to four games with a backhanded goal in the first period with help from Meier, who set up the play from the top of the left face-off circle, feeding Drabin in the slot.
Drabin returned the favor midway through the second period, assisting on Meier’s goal that put Johnstown up 2-0.
A goal by Bismarck’s Huba Sekesi cut the deficit in half.
Cuckovich added to Johnstown’s lead 6:10 into the third period when he cleared the puck on the penalty kill and deflected it off Bismarck goalie Aaron Nelson.
Huskies capture Bellwood crown
BELLWOOD – Bishop Carroll defeated Central, 25-9, 25-19 to win the championship of the Bellwood-Antis Invitational girls’ volleyball tournament on Saturday.
It is Bishop Carroll’s third straight Bellwood tournament title.
The Huskies went 6-0 in pool play after defeating Hollidaysburg 25-15, 25-14; Blairsville 25-21, 25-17; and McConnelsburg 25-10, 25-16. Bishop Carroll defeated Hollidaysburg 25-17, 25-17 in the semifinals.
Sarah Gomish had 53 kills, while Hayley Holsberger and Ellie Yahner contributed 24 kills each in the tournament. Bishop Carroll senior setter Janelle Gueguen added 100 assists, and libero Rachel Kwisnek had 18 digs.
“The girls played well today,” Bishop Carroll coach Joe Skura said. “They came in with momentum and did their job all day long. They worked well together to three-peat at this tournament. This was one of our goals and they got the job done. I’m very proud of their hard work.”
Kutztown beats Pitt-Johnstown
KUTZTOWN – A three-goal outburst in the first half was all Kutztown needed on Saturday to dispatch visiting Pitt-Johnstown 3-0 in a PSAC women’s contest.
The Lady Cats fell to 0-6-0 overall – all matches in the PSAC.
The Golden Bears started off the match with a header goal by Hanna Fenstermacher assisted by Diana Malanga and Megan Frailer in the 12th minute. Kutztown added another goal 11 minutes later by Frailer.
Rubi Minik scored the final goal of the match from 25 yards out in the 30th minute.
Leeann Gorman gave up all three goals and made five saves. Rebekah Schultz, who replaced Gorman in the 78th minute, made two saves. Alina Rakiewicz and Jess Campbell combined in goal for the shutout for Kutztown.
The Golden Bears improved to
3-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the PSAC.
UPJ men slip past Chowan
Colin Michalski scored the lone goal of the match midway through the second half to lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Chowan Saturday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
The Mountain Cats made it two straight victories and improved to 2-3-0 overall.
With rain falling through the entire match, Pitt-Johnstown was finally able to find the back of the net when Michalski took Steve Marsh’s cross and beat Chowan goalkeeper Jax Eddleman in the 68th minute.
Tim Ofman made three saves and earned the shutout in goal for the Mountain Cats. Eddleman was forced to make eight saves and allowed one goal in net for Chowan.
With the loss Chowan fell to 0-3-0 overall.
