Johnstown takes two from Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mi. — The Johnstown Tomahawks have seen their share of low-scoring games, but what made Sunday’s game at Kalamazoo different was what happened after regulation and overtime.

The Tomahawks and Jr. K-Wings took part in a 10-round shootout, and Johnstown came away a 2-1 winner following Jeff Bergh’s shooutout goal.

The opening 20 minutes was sharp, fast-paced, and physical, but neither team was able to score.

Kalamazoo goalie Alex Okicki made 13 first-period stops, including two point-blank, goal-saving saves on Jordan Watt. Johnstown started Chris Truehl for the second consecutive day and he made six stops in his flawless first period.

It took nearly 12 minutes of action in the second for Johnstown to break the scoreless tie.

After a span of superb, highlight-reel saves by Okicki, a seemingly innocent shot by Zach Wallace somehow found a way to trickle through Okicki’s pads and into the goal to give the Tomahawks a 1-0 edge.

Mike Fazio scored the equalizer in the third period when he got a feed along the left side and fired a wrister that beat Truehl over the shoulder. His 18th goal of the year came with 2:24 remaing.

The Tomahawks (26-20-12, 64 points), who clinched a playoff berth with Saturday’s victory, dominated the overtime with eight shots.
