UPJ, Clarion split twin bill

After allowing five unearned runs in a 9-0 loss to Clarion in Monday’s PSAC doubleheader opener at Point Stadium, Pitt-Johnstown earned a split with an 11-6 win in the nightcap.

 Jake Stern belted a grand slam and drove in six to help the Mountain Cats win.

Kyle Morrow had two hits, including a double, for the Mountain Cats, in the Game 1 loss. Nate Pope was the losing pitcher, dropping to 0-4 after surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits over the first three innings.

Rylan Schnably tossed the final three innings and gave up three  unearned runs on six hits.

In Game 2, Stern went 2-for-4 with the grand slam and a double while Jake Warner added three hits, including a double for Pitt-Johnstown. Nate Negri collected two hits and drove in three, and Morrow and Ernesto Rizzitano each had two hits and an RBI. Matt McGhee also had two of the Mountain Cats’ 15 hits.

Dominic Kriner evened his record at 1-1 after giving up two runs on six hits in four innings.

Ryan Socol pitched the final two innings and didn’t allow a run to record his fourth save of the season.

Pitt-Johnstown, which heads to California for a doubleheader today, is now 9-14 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC Western Division while Clarion is 4-12 overall and 2-6.

Mustangs roll over Wildcats

PORTAGE – Luke Dividock struck out four and allowed three hits as the Mustangs crushed the Wildcats 16-1 in four innings on Monday.

Dividock had three hits including two doubles for Portage (3-0), which also got a 3-for-3 outing from Bailey Kerch as well as a 3-for-4 afternoon from Mike Bryja. Bryja drove in four runs and Kerch had two RBI.

Andrew Gaydosh had a double and drove in Homer-Center’s run.

Beeman leads Somerset to win

SOMERSET – Raven Beeman earned the win on the mound striking out two and giving up three hits in five innings as the Golden Eagles downed the Rams 7-2.

Beeman helped his own cause with two hits and two RBI while teammate Bryce Mostoller added a pair of hits with a double and drove in a run. Alex Dirienzo also had a double for Somerset, which is still unbeaten at 3-0.

Jack Shirk hit a solo home run and Matt Roland had two hits for Richland.

  • Dodgers Pirates Polanco, Walker lift Pirates over Dodgers

    Gregory Polanco broke out of a slump with a solo home run and a tiebreaking two-run single, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 12-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
    Polanco, hitting just .133 in his previous 11 games, smacked a bases-loaded single with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh in front for good.

  • Pirates 0721 Rallying Dodgers snap Pirates’ win streak at 3 games

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.

    Taking the extra base was the key for the Pittsburgh Pirates in completing a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.
