It’s been 12 years since a Forest HIlls doubles team advanced to the PIAA Tournament.
On Saturday at the Leopold Tennis Center, that drought ended when senior Rachel Blanchetti and junior Emily Goldyn defeated Westmont Hilltop’s Beth Carney and Ellie Kane.
The Rangers pair won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to claim the District 6 doubles crown.
“It was a real close match,” Forest Hills coach John Waksmunski said. “It really came down to two shots. Rachel and Emily played their hearts out and were fortunate to get the win.”
Waksmunski said that Kane, a junior, and Carney, a sophomore, had the stronger ground strokes in the match.
“The keys to our girls win was their serving and net play,” Waksmunski said.
Blanchetti and Goldyn advance to the state tournament which is set for Nov. 1-2 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The Rangers twosome will face the District 11 champions in the first round.
