McKillop’s title helps Pitt-Johnstown to second-place finish

KUTZTOWN — Travis McKillop’s championship at 184 pounds led Pitt-Johnstown’s wrestlers to a second-place finish behind Newberry on Saturday in the Division II Super Region I Tournament at Kutztown University.

Newberry had 1471⁄2 points while UPJ posted 119.

“We came in second,” said Mountain Cats coach Pat Pecora. “We were a better dual-meet team, but they were a better tournament team.”

Six other Mountain Cats earned spots in the March 8-9 national tournament

“We have seven guys going to nationals,” Pecora said. “Out of our 10 wrestlers, nine are in the top five.”

After cruising into the semifinals with a pin and a major decision on Friday, McKillop won a 10-3 decision over Mercyhurst’s Eric Lundgren before shutting out Newberry's Mitch Brown 7-0 to claim the title at 184.

Evan Link (125) and Dave Cawley (141) each finished as runners-up. Link took a 9-7 loss to Willie Bohince in the title bout while top-seeded Daniel Ownbye took a championship after Cawley was forced to injury default in the third period.

Dave Fogle (133), Gary Lantz (174) and Josh Duplin (285 lbs.) reached the semifinals before finishing fourth to claim spots at nationals.

UPJ’s Keith Ryan had to win a true-fourth match to reach the nationals, and Keith Ryan pinned Shippensburg’s Robert Scheivert in the true-fourth match at 165 to finish out the Mountain Cats roster for nationals.

Jack Bachman (149) and Nikos Garafola (197) lost true-fourth matches and placed fifth.

“We maybe could have gotten Jack Bachman to nationals,” Pecora said. “He was up by one when he got caught in a move and was out. But, I’m not disappointed. We wrestled well and put in two good days.”

Joel Paolo wrestled at 157 for UPJ, but did not advance to Saturday's action.
