St. Francis men’s basketball coach Rob Krimmel filled a vacancy on his coaching staff Monday with the hiring of Mike Sumney as an associate head coach.
Sumney spent the past four seasons at Miami (Fla.) and was previously worked as an assistant coach with St. Francis from 1999 to 2003.
“I am excited to welcome Mike back to St. Francis,” said Krimmel. “His experiences as both an assistant coach and as a head coach will be very valuable to our players and to the program. Mike is a great person who will work tirelessly to make sure our student-athletes have the best possible experience during their time in Loretto.”
Summey served as Director of Basketball Operations with the Hurricanes, overseeing the day-to-day administrative operations of the program. A 1997 graduate of North Carolina State, Summey has an extensive coaching background, including one season as the head coach at Division III Bethany College (2008-09) and two years as as assistant head coach at North Florida (2006-08), aiding in the Ospreys' transition to NCAA Division I.
“I am extremely excited to be a member of the St. Francis University family,” said Summey. “The long-standing friendship, belief and respect that I have for Coach Krimmel makes this the perfect time for me to return to a place that is very special to me.”
As the head coach for Division III Bethany in 2008-09, the Bison went 17-12 and finished second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a 9-3 mark en route to a PAC championship game berth and an ECAC South Region Tournament invitation. Despite losing four starters, Summey posted the best record in Bethany history for a first-year head coach.
Summey also served for two years as an assistant coach at The Citadel and his career also included a stop at Queens (N.C.) University in Charlotte.
