Penn State coach resigns

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State baseball coach Robbie Wine resigned on Tuesday.

“I have decided to step down as the Penn State head baseball coach to pursue other opportunities in the sport of baseball,” Wine said. “I am excited to start a new chapter in my life and look forward to what lies ahead. My experience at Penn State has made me a better coach and person.”

Wine coached the Lions since 2005 and ended his career with a 228-261 overall record. In Big Ten conference play, Wine tallied a 111-135 record.

He helped the Lions reach the Big Ten tournament four times, two of those four were in 2011 and 2012.

Penn State Athletic Director Dave Joyner said the search for Wine’s successor will begin immediately.

Ebensburg slips past Patton

EBENSBURG – Ebensburg pitcher Troy Templeton scratched out a

1-0 win Tuesday night in the Cambria County Legion.

Patton pitcher Andrew Brawley took the loss.

Brawley gave up the lone run after walking the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Galko scored the run. Caleb Palko had two hits.

Ebensburg improved to 6-4 and Patton fell to 8-2.

Johnston downs Ophthalmic

Justin Taylor hit a two-run home run as Johnston Realty trumped Ophthalmic Associates

7-2 Tuesday night in an interleague game at Roxbury Park.

Jake Weibley and Brandon Myers both doubled for Johnston Realty.

Dylan Corl had two hits and Justin Donaldson doubled for Ophthalmic Associates.

Martella’s blanks Ophthalmic

Rylan Schnably struck out seven in a complete-game, three-hit shutout as Martella’s Pharmacy beat Ophthalmic Associates 4-0 in Monday’s late game at Roxbury Park.

Pat Gully went 2-for-3 with one run batted in. Dillon Boyer doubled and scored twice. Sam Barbera doubled, scored once and drove in a run.

Kochasic tosses three-hit upset

In Tuesday’s late game at Point Stadium, Laurel Auto Group pitcher Matt Kochasic tossed a three-hitter in a 6-3 upset of league-leader Delweld.

Joe Fearer and Ben Webb each went 2-for-3, and Zac Heide went 2-for-4 for Laurel. Delweld’s Ian Helsel, Josh Staniscia and Drew Hemminger had their team’s only hits.

Zach Zimmerman pitched the seventh inning for Laurel Auto Group and recorded the save.

  • Dodgers Pirates Polanco, Walker lift Pirates over Dodgers

    Gregory Polanco broke out of a slump with a solo home run and a tiebreaking two-run single, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 12-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
    Polanco, hitting just .133 in his previous 11 games, smacked a bases-loaded single with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh in front for good.

  • Pirates 0721 Rallying Dodgers snap Pirates’ win streak at 3 games

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.

    Taking the extra base was the key for the Pittsburgh Pirates in completing a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.
