Local sports in brief 5/18/2013


JOHNSTOWN — Somerset 11, Bedford 8: In Somerset, Maddie Ream and Syd Geary collected a pair of hits, including a triple and three RBI each, for the Golden Eagles.

Sam Shaffer singled three times for Somerset while Alyssa Turkovich went 3-for-3 with three RBI for Bedford. Ashley Rose had a pair of singles.

Bellwood-Antis 3, Westmont Hilltop 1: In Bellwood, Emily Nagle had two hits on Thursday, including a double, and scored a run while Taylor Payne picked up the win with 11 strikeouts as the Blue Pirates advanced from the first round of the District 6 Class A playoffs.

Kaitlin Mical, Tori Parlock, Alyssa Miller and Megan Zolnosky had a hit each for the Hilltoppers. Mical drove in a run and Parlock scored one. Parlock threw a complete game, striking out three.


High School

Meyersdale 4, Conemaugh Township 2: In Meyersdale, Gabe Yoder went 3-for-3 with two runs and a double, and Lance Leydig had two hits with a solo homer in the 17-1 Red Raiders’ home win.

Steve Haer had two hits and was the winning pitcher. Conemaugh Township’s Adam Naugle went 3-for-4 and drove in both of his team’s runs. Dillon Boyer and Bruno Rosa each had two hits.

Windber 9, HOPE for Hyndman 7: In Windber, Shawn Kaiser went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Ramblers’ 12-hit attack in their season finale.

Michael Barbe tripled and Bryce Spak doubled for Windber (8-12). Steve Moxim pitched a complete game.

Hope for Hyndman (11-9) scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Saltsburg 6, Bishop Carroll 5: In Saltsburg, Mitchell Yard had a home run and Brody Dioda hit a three-run triple to lead the Trojans in a first-round District 6 Class A playoff game on Thursday.

Zach Farabaugh and Kenny Weiland had two hits each for the Huskies. Farabaugh drove in three runs while Weiland doubled twice and Scott Lucas had a double.

The Huskies’ Josh Surkovich took the loss with four strikeouts and four walks.
