Patton slips past Portage in 10 innings

JOHNSTOWN — Nate Bearer chased in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th to help Patton squeak past host Portage, 4-3, in Friday’s Cambria American Legion playoff game.

Adam Polites had two hits and scored the game-winning run for the Redmen while Josh Serafin had two hits and an RBI in the win while Josh Prasko also drove in a run.

Portage’s Bailey Kerch knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh and provided two hits. Zach Coukart had two hits and an RBI while Nick Ursy had a hit and chased in a run.

Patton travels to Claysburg today to face the top seed in a 3 p.m. battle of the tournament’s remaining unbeaten squads. Portage faces Ebensburg, which won by forfeit over Lilly on Friday, at 10 a.m.

St. Michael hosts Bedford at 3 p.m. in the other consolation bracket game. 

In other Cambria American Legion playoff games:

Claysburg 5, Bedford 2: In Claysburg, the hosts got two hits each from Presley Swope and Tyler Ickes and Ickes drove in two runs during a winners bracket game. Ethan Lewis doubled and drove in two runs.

Bedford’s Spencer McInroy was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

St. Michael 4, Richland 1: At St. Michael, Richland was eliminated from the playoffs as St. Michael advanced.

Joe Donoughe tripled and scored a run while teammate Spencer Ivock also had a hit and scored to lead the Saints.

Richland pitcher Bob Varner threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 10, but lost.

Varner scored Richland’s only run when he tripled in the seventh and scored on Steve Moxim’s pinch-hit single to left.

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.

    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.
