Mount softball takes No. 5 seed into tournament

CRESSON — The fifth-seeded Mount Aloysius women’s softball team won six of its final eight games to build some momentum for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.

The Mount will face No. 4 seeded Pitt-Greensburg on Friday at Penn State-Altoona.

Mount Aloysius is 24-11 overall and 10-8 in the AMCC. Pitt-Greensburg is 20-15, 12-6.

Coach Carl Teeter’s Mounties won the AMCC regular season crown in 2012 and 2011, the latter season finishing second in the conference tournament.

A pair of junior players top the Mounties offense, as outfielder Jalisa Westover (.432 batting average, 54 hits, 28 RBI) and third baseman Lindsy Sammarco (.394, 39 hits, 28 RBI) have each started all 35 games. Sammarco is a Bishop Carroll graduate.

Sophomore outfielder Danielle Hart (.347), freshman second baseman Emilee Gearhart (.340) and sophomore infielder Marissa Ayers (.330) also are batting over .300.

Ayers has a team-high 29 RBI and tied Westover for the Mounties lead with seven doubles.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Kelsey Ickes went 12-4 with a 2.84 ERA.

The Claysburg-Kimmel graduate struck out 115 batters and walked 58 in 107 2⁄3 innings. Junior righty Shelby Kline went 7-3 with a 3.17 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 11 walks in 82 1⁄3 innings.
