STATE COLLEGE — VOLLEYBALL

Lakin reaches assist milestone

Forest Hills High School senior Lakin Stiffler surpassed 1,000 assists for her varsity career during a match against visiting Hollidaysburg on Monday night.

Lakin needed only three assists entering the match and reached the milestone early in the first game of a five-game Rangers victory over the Golden Tigers.

She thanked her family, teammates, coaches and the Forest Hills fans for their support.

GOLF

Forest Hills grad honored

Seton Hill women’s golfer Chelsea Sipes, a 2010 Forest Hills High School graduate, has been named PSAC Women’s Golfer of the Week for her performance in the Allegheny Invitational last weekend at the County Club of Meadville.

Sipes finished second among NCAA golfers, and third among a field of 44 competitors overall in the two-day event. The senior from Salix had a 162 with rounds of 79 and 83.

Seton Hill placed second as a team against NCAA competition. The University of Toronto placed first.

RUNNING

McCort product wins 10K race

PITTSBURGH - Former Bishop McCort and Duquesne University runner Jim Spisak won Saturday’s 10K open division race at the 36th running of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race.

Spisak, 22, finished in a time of 28:54 among the 10,000 runners registered for the event.

A record field of 15,500 runners and walkers took to the streets for this year’s race.

SOCCER

Slippery Rock beats UPJ men

Slippery Rock scored four first half goals and went on to deal the Pitt-Johnstown a 4-0 PSAC loss, Wednesday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.

 Zach Hall gave Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead four minutes into the match, before The Rock added additional goals in the 16th, 26th, and 36th minute to build a 4-0 halftime lead.

Chris Zier earned the shutout in net for Slippery Rock after making one save on five shots.

Tim Ofman took the loss for Pitt-Johnstown, surrendering four goals and making six saves.

With the loss Pitt-Johnstown fell to 2-7; Slippery Rock improved to 6-1-1.

  • Pirates 0721 Rallying Dodgers snap Pirates’ win streak at 3 games

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.

    Florida State was an obvious choice as a favorite in one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s divisions.

    Claysburg’s Mike Mock went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to help his squad get by Beech Creek 7-6 during Sunday’s winners-bracket game in the Pa. American Legion Region 7 Tournament.

    Taking the extra base was the key for the Pittsburgh Pirates in completing a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.
