District 5 gets set to jump into the baseball and softball playoffs this week.

Class A softball opens with four games on Wednesday, all set for 4:30 p.m.

Shade earned the top seed and will face No. 8 Meyersdale while the other upper bracket game has fifth-seeded Hope for Hyndman at No. 4 Tussey Mountain.

In the lower bracket, No. 2 Conemaugh Township will host No. 7 Turkeyfoot Valley while defending  state champion Fannett-Metal, the third seed, will host No. 6 Rockwood.

The semifinals are at neutral sites on May 28 with the final on May 30 also at a neutral site.

In Class AA, the semifinals are both at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with top-seeded Chestnut Ridge playing host to No. 4 Bedford and No. 3 Windber at second-seeded Everett. The title game will be at a neutral site on May 29.

The District 5 baseball brackets had not been updated in time for this edition of The Tribune-Democrat. The rankings were updated as of Friday.

In Class A, unbeaten North Star holds the top spot with Meyersdale second. McConnellsburg is third with Southern Fulton, fourth. The next three are Hope for Hyndman, Shade and Berlin Brothersvalley. Rockwood secured the No. 8 spot over Conemaugh Township with a win on Saturday.

In Class AA, Everett holds the top seed with Bedford, second. Northern Bedford, Chestnut Ridge and Windber are third through fifth, respectively.

District 6 playoffs also continue today in baseball and softball with games set for 4 p.m.

In Class A baseball, defending state champion and top-seeded Bishop McCort opens with No. 8 Saltsburg, a 6-5 victor over Bishop Carroll on Thursday, in quarterfinal action.

The other games have fifth-seeded Portage at No. 4 Homer-Center, third-seeded Conemaugh Valley hosting No. 6 Juniata Valley and seventh-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle at No. 2 Claysburg-Kimmel.

The semifinals are Thursday and the title game is at 7 p.m. May 30 at People’s Natural Gas field in Altoona.

In Class AA quarterfinal games, top-seeded Blairsville hosts No. 8 Cambria Heights and seventh-seeded Mount Union is at No. 2 Bald Eagle Area.

Ligonier Valley, the sixth seed, is at third-seeded Richland and fifth-seeded Bellwood-Antis is at No. 4 Central.

The semifinals are set for Thursday with the championship at 7 p.m. on May 29 at Peoples Natural Gas field.

Somerset and Hollidaysburg are the top two seeds in Class AAA, which also begins play today.

Fifth-seeded Huntingdon is at No. 4 Bellefonte while sixth-seeded Greater Johnstown is at No. 3 Obama Academy.

The semifinals are Thursday with the title game at 4 p.m. on May 30.

In District 6 softball, Class A begins today with four quarterfinal games.

No. 5 Bishop Carroll plays at fourth-seeded Ferndale and No. 6 Conemaugh Valley is at No. 3 Portage. The other games have top-seeded Claysburg-Kimmel hosting No. 8 Williamsburg with No. 7 West Branch at No. 2 Southern Huntingdon.

The semifinals are Thursday with the Class A championship as well as the Class AA and Class AAA title tilts, at Penn State on May 29.

After the upsets last week in Class AA, the brackets show that No. 6 Richland hosts No. 14 Huntingdon while Ligonier Valley, the 10th seed, will welcome No. 15 Juniata. Top-seeded Philipsburg-Osceola hosts Mount Union and No. 13 Penns Valley is at No. 5 Bellwood-Antis.

The semifinals are Thursday.

Class AAA semifinals are Thursday with top-seeded Johnstown hosting No. 4 Hollidaysburg while third-seeded Bellefonte is at No. 2 Somerset.

    Gregory Polanco broke out of a slump with a solo home run and a tiebreaking two-run single, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 12-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
    Polanco, hitting just .133 in his previous 11 games, smacked a bases-loaded single with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh in front for good.

    Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings, Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Monday night.
    Ryu (11-5) joined Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw in making the Dodgers the first team in the majors with three 11-game winners.
