High school sports in brief 5/7/2014

JOHNSTOWN — Softball

Meyersdale 10, Berlin Brothersvalley 2: In Berlin, the Red Raiders’ Savannah Leonard had 15 strikeouts and gave up six hits in a win against the Mountaineers. 

Meyersdale’s Jordan Ceretta and Jackie McKenzie each had two hits in the win. 

Berlin Brothersvalley’s Erin Maust went 3-for-3 and Trista Sutzman struck out 10 in the loss.

Berlin Brothersvalley 21,  Salisbury-Elk Lick 4: In Berlin, the Mountaineers’ Alex Davis had three hits with five RBI in a four-inning mercy-rule victory against the Elks. 

Berlin Brothersvalley’s Aleesa Feig had two singles with three RBI.

The Elks’ Emily Lowery had a single in the WestPAC loss.

Penn Cambria 9, Forest Hills 3: In Sidman, the Panthers’ Kelly Yusko struck out 10 batters in a LHAC tilt against the Rangers

Yusko also had three hits with a triple and a home run.  Penn Cambria’s Caitlyn Sheehan hit a home run and Kaite Little had three hits in the win. 

The Panthers’ are now 15-0 on the season. 

Forest Hills’ Taylor Delusa hit a triple.

Central Cambria 10, Cambria Heights 8: In Patton, the Red Devil’s Kirsten Lajudice had four hits and knocked in a run to help edge the Highlanders.

Central Cambria’s Kaitlyn Novitsky had three singles and hit in a run. 

Cambria Heights’ Julie Pirchard hit a three-run home run.

Bishop Carroll 10, Bishop Guilfoyle 0: In Ebensburg, the Huskies’ Sarah Gomish had three hits and two RBI in a shut-out-victory against the Marauders. 

Bishop Carroll’s Taylor Rake had three hits and knocked in a run. 

Bishop Guilfoyle’s Braylee Lewis hit a single in the LHAC loss. 

Blacklick Valley 12, Rockwood 8: In Nanty Glo, Allison Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and had three RBI to help lead the Vikings past the Rockets.

Blacklick Valley’s Corrine Cesarz had three hits with a run knocked in and Brook Galko had two hits with three RBI in the WestPAC victory. 

Rockwood’s Laura Lalone and Belle Hager each went 2-for-4 with a triple. 

Ferndale 11, North Star 1: The Yellow Jacket’s Taylor Yuhas had three hits with a double and knocked in a run to blow past the Cougars in six innings.

Yuhas also earned the win with eight strikeouts and gave up only three hits.  Kayla Thomas had two hits and two-run home run in the sixth inning. 

North Star’s Morgan Cannin and Josie Bittner each hit a double in the loss.

Greater Johnstown 11-5, Richland 10-4: Lexi Lindrose slammed a two-run homer in the first game and teammate Tara Bicko hit a solo shot in the nightcap as Greater Johnstown swept both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Richland.

Chelsea Gregley was 2-for-3 for the Trojans in the opener. Sam Felton was 3-for-4 and Courtney Syfert 2-for-4 for the Rams.

Bicko was 3-for-4 with a single, double and four runs scored in the second game.

Shaylah Merriman went 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple and also scored twice while Lindrose was 4-for-5 with three doubles, a triple, a run scored and three RBI. Lauren Stanko went 2-for-4.

Felton was 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Rams whle Syfert was 3-for-5 and Ashley Swansboro was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Samantha Hauser went 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Conemaugh Valley 12, Conemaugh Township 11: In Davidsville, Liz Stiffler was 2-for-5 with a home run while Kaitlyn Stiffler also homered as the Blue Jays won a 11-inning game.

Mikayla Lint had three hits and Brooke McCleester had two for the Jays.

Beth Brenchak and McKenna Daugherty were each 3-for-7 for the hosts while Kayla Folta was 3-for-6 and Abby Cover was 2-for-5.

Daugherty struck out 16 and gave up just three earned runs. Lint had five strikeouts and gave up four earned runs.


Somerset 11-11, Westmont Hilltop 0-1: In a double header at Somerset, Connor Darr had eight strikeouts in the first game to help the Golden Eagles shut out the Hilltoppers in five innings. 

Somerset’s Bryce Mostoller had tow hits with two RBI and Tanner Stull had two hits with a run batted in. 

Westmont Hilltop’s Brandon Leech hit it’s only single. 

In the second game, Ross Dirienzo hit a triple with two RBI and Raven Beeman had two singles to help Somerset win in five innings again. 

Rockwood 13, Blacklick Valley 1: In Nanty Glo, the Rockets’ Max Secheler was 2-for-5 and scored two runs in a six-inning mercy-rule victory against the Vikings. 

Rockwood’s Kyle Pritts had four hits with a double. 

Ethan Keefer and Matt Zerfoss each had two hits in the win.

Blacklick Valley’s Derek Cesarz was 2-for-3 in the home loss. 

North Star 10, Ferndale 7: The Cougars’ Brady Walker had two hits with a home run to help edge the Yellow Jackets on the road. 

North Star’s Zack Maluchnik and Shand Supanick each hit a double in the win. 

Ferdale’s Trey McGough hit a solo home run in the first inning. 

Portage 18, Windber 0:  In Portage, Luke Dividok and Bailey Kerch each had three RBI to help the Mustangs shut out the Ramblers in three innings. 

Portage’s Brad Rosemas and Mike Bryja had two hits in the win.

Windber’s Matt Barkley and Cody Louder each hit a single. 

Richland 11, Greater Johnstown 0: Richland’s Andrew Frear with 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and knocked in a run to help blank the Trojans in five innings. 

The Rams’ Jack Shirk had two doubles and had three RBI.  Tyler Mikesic hit two doubles and drove in two runs.  

Nathan Ziants and Nico Pecora each had two hits in the LHAC win. 

Conemaugh Township 6, Conemaugh Valley 5: In Davidsville, Josh McKool hit a two-run double to put the Indians in the lead in the sixt inning and edge the Blue Jays. 

Conemaugh Township’s Bruno Rosa scored had two hits and scored twice in the home win. 

Conemaugh Valley’s Anthony Verno had two hits and Drake Markiewicz had one hit with a run scored. 

Forest Hills 9, Penn Cambria 5: In Lilly, Blaine Harteis went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Zach Shearman was 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead the Rangers.

Harteis and Shearman each doubled.

Tanner Polinski doubled and scored, and Logan Madison doubled.

Jordan Sinoski went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Panthers while Gavin Martynuska doubled and scored a run.

Bishop Carroll 11, Bishop Guilfoyle 0: In Atoona, Marty Lessard was 3-for-3 with six RBI, two singles and a double to lead the Huskies.

Josh Surkovich was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two singles.

Matt Gormley’s first-inning single was the only hit given up by Brandon Martinazzi.

Cambria Heights 12, Central Cambria 9: In Ebensburg, Nick Milanesi, Josh Serafin and Richard Legros drove in two runs each to lead the Highlanders in an extra-inning game.

T.J. Adams, Kevin Sisko and Colby Crimmins had three hits each for the hosts.
