Bedford bounces Steel Valley

FOX CHAPEL — Kody Blevins had three hits, and Andrew Smith tossed five solid innings until Austin Mongomery closed the game as Bedford High School defeated District 7 Steel Valley 10-4 on Monday in the PIAA Class AA Tournament.

The District 5 champion Bisons improved to 13-6 by knocking out the WPIAL champion Ironmen. Steel Valley finished 19-3.

“We were down 2-0 going into the third,” Bedford coach Scott Waugerman said. “We got a walk and a Dylan Daniel double and a couple ground balls that drove in runs.”

Daniel had two hits and drove in a pair. Smith was strong at the plate, too. He went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

Bedford had 12 hits against Steel Valley pitching.

“We’ve been hitting the ball pretty good in the playoffs and it continued tonight,” Waugerman said. “Both of their kids are pretty good pitchers too.”

Steel Valley senior pitcher Derek Morrison threw into the fifth inning before being relieved by Brandon Donovan.

Bedford tied the game at 2-all with two runs in the top of the third.

The Bisons added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 7-2.

Steel Valley battled back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the gap to 7-4.

But Bedford plated three more in the top of the seventh, padding its lead for closer Montgomery.

“After they scored a couple runs in the sixth, we came back out in the seventh and were able to score three runs,” Waugerman said.

Bedford will face District 10 runner-up Northwestern, a 7-6 winner over District 9 champion Karns City, on Thursday in the quarterfinal round.

A site and time for Thursday’s quarterfinal has not been determined.

“Going into the next game we’re oging to focus on doing the same thing we’ve been doing at the plate,” Waugerman said. “This time of the year, of course, you want good pitching and good defense.”
