Mercer County DA dropping drug charges in 'air freshener’ search

Associated Press

FARRELL The Mercer County district attorney is dropping drug charges against a passenger of a car because he says the vehicle was illegally searched after police stopped it for having an air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.

The DA dropped marijuana and crack cocaine possession charges against 33-year-old Michael Campbell, of Farrell.

Campbell was riding in the car police stopped on May 2 because it had a pine tree air freshener on the mirror. Police say they found the drugs when they searched the car after the stop.

Because the stop wasn’t warranted, anything found in the car can’t be used as evidence against Campbell.
