NEW – Pitt replacing 3,000 diplomas lost in flooding

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH The University of Pittsburgh is rushing to replace about 3,000 diplomas that were destroyed when heavy rains caused flooding in a building where the documents were stored last week.

The diplomas for April graduates were stored in a ground floor office when the rains hit Wednesday night. Students do not receive official diplomas at the graduation ceremony, instead they are mailed to students a few weeks later.

Pitt spokesman John Fedele says the diplomas will arrive about 10 days later. University officials are double-checking the spellings of student names so new diplomas can be rush-ordered and in the mail by July 2.

Pitt officials aren’t saying how much the new diplomas will cost.
