Greene County hunter’s shooting death ruled an accident

Associated Press

WAYNESBURG A deputy coroner says a hunter died in southwestern Pennsylvania when he slipped on a log and shot himself in the chest.

Greene County Deputy Coroner Mary Lewis says an autopsy and other information gathered by state police have confirmed that 53-year-old Mark Petrun, of Smithfield, died while squirrel hunting on Oct. 26.

State police and Petrun’s family discovered his body in a wooded area of Whiteley Township after he failed to return from hunting. The township is about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Lewis says Petrun’s death was ruled an accident after investigators determined his gun fired because he slipped.
