Man charged after Westmoreland County mom shot near 4 kids

DERRY — A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and critically wounded her while she was in bed watching television with her teenage daughter, while three other siblings were at home.

Troopers from the Greensburg barracks say the children were not physically injured when 51-year-old Arthur Whitfield, of Josephine, broke into Holly Embry’s Derry Township home about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Trooper Stephen Limani says Embry remained in a Pittsburgh hospital in “very critical” condition Monday.

Limani says Whitfield was unhappy over a change in their relationship, broke into the home and shot Embry. Their 15-year-old daughter in bed with Embry and another older sibling witnessed the shooting. Two other children of Embry’s, ages 9 and 13, were elsewhere in the house and also not physically harmed.
