Blair County man jailed after standoff with police

NEWRY — A Blair County man is jailed on charges he fired a shot through the exterior wall of his estranged wife’s home before holding police at bay at his home nearby.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 53-year-old Mark Wendt, of Newry, who remained in the Blair County Prison Monday after the standoff early Sunday in Newry. That’s about 30 miles northeast of Johnstown.

Police say Wendt got inside his wife’s home and waited for her to arrive with her brother-in-law and another woman. After arguing, Wendt allegedly went outside and fired a shot through an exterior wall about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Police say nobody was hurt before Wendt holed up in his house about a mile away.

Police say he surrendered nearly 9 hours later when they set off a flash grenade.
