State police ID 68-year-old woman shot by officer

OIL CITY — State police have identified a 68-year-old woman who was fatally shot by a local officer who responded to a call that she was having a mental breakdown and threatening others at her northwestern Pennsylvania home.

Troopers have not identified the Oil City police officer who shot the woman, or two others who were involved in the call, but say the dead woman is Marilyn Elizabeth Peterson.

The Venango County coroner has not returned calls for results on an autopsy, which is expected to confirm the woman died from a single shot fired by the officer about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

State police Capt. Steve Ignatz says “preliminary indications are that the officers were responding to a call of a person with reported mental issues” when she attacked one officer with a knife and was shot.
