DA: Cafeteria workers used stolen money to gamble

Associated Press

CHARLEROI — Authorities say two former school cafeteria workers used almost $94,000 they stole to feed gambling habits.

District Attorney Eugene A. Vittone says 50-year-old Stacy Lee Shipley and 49-year-old Sheila Ann Cook, both of Charleroi, used the cafeteria money to gamble at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino.

The women were charged after Charleroi school officials reported that $93,987 was missing from the cafeteria fund. The school is about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Shipley’s attorney, Raymond P. Amatangelo, says she had a gambling addiction and is “very remorseful” about what happened. A message left at a listing for Cook wasn’t immediately returned, but authorities say she’s admitted to the thefts, too.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 25.
