4 dead in "horrific" western Pennsylvania head-on crash

SOUTH BEND — A coroner now says four people have died in what he’s calling a “horrific” head-on crash in western Pennsylvania.

Authorities in Armstrong County said the two-vehicle crash was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in South Bend Township, which is about 40 miles northwest of Johnstown.

Coroner Brian Myers pronounced three people dead at the scene and reported early Thursday that a fourth has died. Three people were flown from the scene in medical helicopters, but it wasn’t immediately clear if one of them later died or whether all three have survived.

Myers says the crash occurred on Route 156 near Gobblers Run Road.

State police are investigating the cause of the accident and have yet to release the names of those who were driving or killed.
