SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. —
The Johnstown Tomahawks scored a pair of second-period goals to take a lead, but first-place Soo netted three straight goals and the host Eagles won 5-2 on Friday night.
The Tomahawks are 19-14-9 with 47 points. Soo improved to 27-10-3 to lead the North Division with 57 points. The teams meet again at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Soo’s Jared VanWormer had two goals to help his team overcome a one-goal deficit and please a crowd of 680.
VanWormer scored on the power play at 16:21 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again at 19:53 into the second to make the score 3-2 Soo.
The Tomahawks had used a strong second period to briefly take the lead. Captain Mitch Kontny scored 55 seconds into the middle period to tie the game at 1-all. Johnstown’s Cody Gylling assisted on that goal, and later gave the ’Hawks a 2-1 lead at 13:53. Jordan Watt assisted on the go-ahead goal.
But VanWormer’s two tallies put the Eagles in front. Soo added a pair of third-period goals by Alexander Taulien and Chris Waterstreet. The Eagles also had a first-period goal by Waterstreet.
Soo’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Johnstown power plays. The Eagles’ offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 27.7 shots per game they average.
Soo was unable to stop Johnstown from sending pucks toward the net, and the Tomahawks eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. Tyler Marble recorded 38 saves for the Eagles. Soo totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Chris Truehl made 34 saves for the Tomahawks on 39 shots. Johnstown ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major.
