Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. —
The Johnstown Tomahawks were not able to build on the momentum they took from the North American Hockey League Showcase, losing 5-2 on Friday night to the Soo Eagles.
The Tomahawks (2-4-1), who won their final two games in Minnesota and had claimed points in three straight, fell behind 3-0 in the first period on Friday and could never recover.
Goalie Colin DeAugustine was pulled after giving up three goals on 10 shots in the first 17 minutes and 16 seconds of the game.
Two of those were on from just inside the blue line. His backup, Alex Okicki, gave up two goals on 30 shots, including the back-breaker three minutes into the third period on a giveaway in his own zone. Ryan Urso took advantage of the nearly open net to give Soo (2-1-2) a 4-1 lead.
Brad Pung had two goals for the Eagles, scoring the goal that chased DeAugustine in the first and adding a power-play goal in the third.
The Tomahawks got on the board at 10:47 of the second period as Jordan Watt scored a power-play goal from the high slot. Zach Wallace assisted on the play.
Each team was 1 for 3 on the power play.
Brandon Reinholz scored the Tomahawks' second goal. After winning a faceoff in the offensive zone, he beat Soo goalie Paige Scoog off a pass from Joe Drabin. Matt Meier also had an assist on the goal, which came with 11:43 remaining in third.
Scoog made 35 saves in the victory, including a big one on Joe Drabin's shorthanded chance five minutes into the third period.
Jacob McDowell opened the scoring with 8:48 left in the first period, as he beat DeAugustine from just inside the blue line. Chase Matson scored less than a minute later after a long breakout pass from Darren Brady. Matson skated in alone on Colin DeAugustine. The Tomahawks goalie stopped two consecutive shots from Matson, but the third time was the charm for Matson, as he beat DeAugustine at the 9:40 mark.
The teams meet again at 7 tonight.
