Nick Belger scored twice, and goaltender Landen Trutt stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Soo Eagles defeated the visiting Johnstown Tomahawks 3-0 on Friday night at Puller Stadium.
The setback ended Johnstown’s three-game winning streak. The second-place Tomahawks also lost ground to North Division-leading Port Huron, a winner over Janesville on Friday.
Johnstown (42 points) now is five points behind the Fighting Falcons (47) in the division.
Soo is 14-14-6 and moved out of last place in the North with 34 points, one more than Janesville.
The Eagles hadn’t played in 12 days, though Soo has won five of its past six games.
Bruno Birzitis opened the scoring 1:37 into the game. Scott Cuthrell and Kirstofers Bindulis had assists.
Belger netted his first of the game at 4:38 of the second period.
He made it a three-goal game with a goal at 18:11 of the third.
Johnstown goaltender Alex Okicki stopped 30 of 33 shots on goal.
Each team was 0 for 5 on the power play.
The Tomahawks and Eagles will meet again tonight at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., with both games played in Soo.
